Supporter,
Last night, President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress and closed with a moral case for health care reform, using the words of Sen. Kennedy to remind Americans that, "at stake are not just the details of policy but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country."
It's Congress' third day back on the job after August recess, and as the President reminded us, we are all in this together and we all have work to do.
Every day in our congregations and communities, people of faith see the effects of our broken health insurance system. With Congress back in session, we have a new opportunity to get reform back on track.
Write your representatives today: let them know that as a person of faith, you support action on health reform NOW.
This summer, we saw what happens to our public debates when demagogues exploit fear. This fall, let's make sure our leaders focus on the facts:
- Health care reform will end discrimination from health insurance companies.
- Reform will provide stability and security for those with health insurance.
- Reform will make quality health care affordable for Americans who currently lack coverage.
This is a critical time in the health care debate. Even though the town hall disruptions are coming to an end, special interests promoting the health insurance status quo have not given up their campaign to kill reform. President Obama's speech on its own won't be enough to beat the special interests. We need to do our part, and we can take back the floor in this debate by flooding our representatives' inboxes with our positive, respectful, values-based message as they return to work.
Write your representatives: let them know you're still paying attention to the health care debate… and their vote.
The disruptive town halls were not the only story of this summer. People of faith from across the country came together with unprecedented coordination and activity to deliver a moral message on health care reform -- and now even the President of the United States has joined us.
Let your representatives know, summer might be over but our actions aren't.
Thank you for all you do,
Beth, Katie, Dan, Kristin and Jennifer
