Public Theology: On a Roll!

Dear Friend,

One newspaper endorsement is okay. Three or four is pretty good. Half a dozen? Outstanding.

So imagine our delight when eight newspapers from around Illinois endorsed Dan Hynes for Governor over the past week! That's a pattern. And that's real momentum going into the final two weeks of the campaign.

If you're keeping score at home, Dan has received eight newspaper endorsements so far, compared to just one for Pat Quinn. Even the Blackhawks aren't on that great a roll.

In picking Dan, the State Journal-Register said:

Hynes has been blowing the whistle on Illinois' sorry financial condition since George Ryan was governor…. Based on the specifics of his ideas to fix Illinois' long-festering fiscal crisis, Democratic voters should pick Dan Hynes for governor. - State Journal-Register endorsement, 1/17/10

And Dan clearly plays in Peoria:

Hynes, on the other hand, has been a good comptroller. He was an ethics reform pioneer before it became fashionable… He started blowing the whistle on Blagojevich and pay-to-play when other Democrats were afraid to, and took on George Ryan before that. He has shown an independent streak. - Peoria Journal Star endorsement, 1/16/10

He is also the only candidate for governor who can unite the suburbs, both North and South, earning the endorsements of the Southtown Star and the Daily Herald, who called him "the clear choice":

We believe Comptroller Dan Hynes is better suited to address the single most important task facing Illinois right now: fixing the budget mess. - Southtown Star editorial, 1/17/10

Hynes is a budget wonk and pragmatist… We endorse Hynes as the much stronger manager and leader for the Democrats. He sees the problems and has a detailed plan. - Daily Herald endorsement, 1/15/10

So there you have it – almost unanimously, opinion leaders from across the state are saying Dan is the right Democrat and right man for the moment. We are really excited, and we can feel a surge in momentum. But we also know these endorsements, which are a great affirmation of Dan's record and the ideas this campaign have been about, are just words on a page without action. To make them meaningful, to put them into action, we need your help.
