Navistar and Putting Illinois Back to Work
Dear Friends,
I'm on my way back from Lisle, where we just announced that Navistar will be keeping its headquarters in Illinois - and expanding its operations.
That means 3,000 new and retained permanent jobs at Navistar for Illinois workers, plus an additional 400 construction jobs as they expand. And Navistar's CEO Dan Ustian says they'll begin hiring 500 engineering jobs immediately. Navistar’s $205 million investment in northeastern Illinois will spur economic growth across the area.
I worked hard to keep Navistar here, and developed a plan to help them expand. But Navistar is just one of 75 companies for which we’ve developed individualized investment packages – we’ve worked with Ford, Boeing, UPS and many others to bring them here, keep them here, and grow them here.
In the 19 months since I’ve been Governor, we’ve worked with large and small businesses to put people back to work.
This spring, I proposed and signed a $2,500 targeted small business job creation tax credit, helping create 20,000 jobs. I signed the first jobs bill in 10 years, which is going to put over 400,000 back to work. This summer, the Put Illinois to Work jobs program I spearheaded put 26,000 people in good paying jobs.
People are going back to work – for instance, we’re glad to see people hard at work on I-290 (though the traffic has left me enough time to write this email) – but I know that many people out there are still struggling.
We’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us. But you should know that this is what I do everyday – work hard to create jobs and make sure that we stay on the road to recovery.
In these last eight weeks, I need help from each and every one of you – we need to keep moving forward, and we need to do it together.
Sincerely,
Pat Quinn
Governor
