A Veterans' Day Message from Governor Pat Quinn
Good Afternoon,
Today, I took part in a ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. As bouquets of red, white and blue flowers were placed on the graves of our fallen heroes, I thought of the quiet patriotism that has inspired so many to give so much.
I know that on this Veterans Day, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Private First Class Michael Pearson, of Bolingbrook, Private Francheska Velez of Chicago, and the 11 other soldiers who so tragically lost their lives at Fort Hood Army Base last week. As President Obama said at yesterday's memorial service: "Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town, every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that is their legacy."
As Governor, and throughout my years in public service, I have been proud to support our military men and women, both while they are on active duty and after their return to civilian life. I hope you will find time today to watch this video and learn more about the ways the State of Illinois is recognizing the service of our veterans and their families.
In these tough economic times, it is easy to focus solely on the individual problems and challenges that we face every day. I hope that on this Veterans Day, everyone in Illinois will take a moment to remember how much we owe our veterans, and how much they have done – and continue to do – to preserve our great democracy.
As we commemorate this Veterans Day, I would like to express the gratitude of everyone in the Land of Lincoln for the many brave men and women who have fought for our freedom in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Sincerely,

Pat Quinn
Governor of Illinois
