What's your money paying for?

Tell the Big Banks: Not With Our Money

The faith community is fed up with the unjust actions of the big banks, so we're organizing our financial assets to get the leverage we need for real reform.

Join the faith community in standing up to the big banks at www.OurMoneyOurValues.org and learn how you can help force banks to reform their ways.

Dear Supporter,

Every day, it seems like there's another scandal coming out of Wall Street. Back in November, the chief executive of Goldman Sachs even had the gall to say he was doing "God's work" [1] when they were handing out obscene bonuses.

All the while thousands of Americans have been suffering the effects of a wrecked economy brought on by the big banks' gambles and greed.

The faith community is fed up. We're organizing a hard-hitting new campaign to hold the banks accountable -- www.OurMoneyOurValues.org -- and we need you to back us up.

The banks are refusing to listen to the needs of our communities, so we're going after them where they'll feel it most: their bottom lines.

We're leveraging personal bank accounts, congregational investments, and even public dollars in negotiations with top bank executives to win the reforms our communities need. We've got real money on the table, but it's still a big fight. As faith leaders step into the big banks' boardrooms, they need to know that millions of Americans are supporting their cause.

Please visit www.OurMoneyOurValues.org and join us in standing up to the big banks.

This is about more than just calling the big banks to account, it's about making life better for our struggling neighbors and communities.

Here's what we're asking them to do:

  • Stop using our money to lobby against consumer protection;
  • Stop throwing people out of their homes unnecessarily;
  • Quit dealing in payday and other predatory lending practices;
  • Make good credit available to help rebuild the economy and put people back to work.

The banks are powerful, but we can win if we come together and say "not with our money."

Join us at www.OurMoneyOurValues.org and be a part of making the big banks listen.

Thanks for all you do,

Beth, Katie, Dan, Kristin and Jennifer

A week for the history books

Quinn for Illinois

The Pulse of Progress

Dear Aaron,

This week, Governor Quinn's leadership produced three important milestones, all ensuring a brighter future for Illinois.

On Tuesday, as small-business leaders looked on, Governor Quinn signed into law the Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit, which established a one-year program that will create 20,000 new jobs throughout the State of Illinois.

Wednesday, the governor signed the most significant pension reform bill in our nation's history. The measure, which Governor Quinn spearheaded, will save Illinois taxpayers more than $200 billion while protecting retirement for state workers.

And yesterday, we kicked off the largest construction season in Illinois history, with the unveiling of the governor's multi-year highway improvement plan.

Governor Quinn's efforts to enact historic pension reforms have been lauded from observers across the political spectrum, including the Wall Street Journal and conservative columnist, George Will.

Respected Illinois Congressman and Judge Abner Mikva wrote:

"Gov. Pat Quinn and the Illinois legislature accomplished a near miracle when they successfully negotiated the "third rail" of Illinois politics: a meaningful reform of state pension laws… More than a faint praise, they deserve a loud hurrah."

Making nukes history

Supporter-

Yesterday, President Obama signed a treaty that commits to cutting stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

For decades, people of faith have been working together to realize the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons, but as of now, no road map to nuclear disarmament exists. The treaty President Obama signed yesterday could be a huge step toward a future with real security free of nuclear weapons - but only if it is approved by the Senate.

That's why I wanted to forward along this message from our friends at TrueMajority, who are working to make sure the Senate realizes how important this treaty is to our safety, our security, and our values.

I hope you'll join them by taking action today to urge the Senate to ratify this important treaty and to stand up for a world without nuclear weapons.

Thanks for all that you do.

Beth

We've been working on nuclear disarmament for decades.

Obama's given us a real chance to make progress. Help me tell our leaders to follow through.

Dear friend,

Like a lot of you, I've been working to reduce our dangerous and expensive nuclear weapons stockpile for a lot of years. Remember when Jerry and I first came out with the Peace Pop, back in 1988, to call attention to the need to change our priorities?

And those of you who have been reading these emails for a while know that when I started TrueMajority we always had nuclear disarmament as a top priority. Hard to improve the world for our kids if we blow it up first!

Well, unfortunately we haven't been making much progress for a while. In fact, the country's stack of strategic nuclear warheads has stayed at the same crazy level for nearly 20 years.

Until now. The new nuclear arms reduction treaty which President Obama signed yesterday with Russia's President Medvedev will start cutting those stockpiles again. It's a fantastic step toward closing the book on the Cold War, at last. That is, IF the Senate approves the treaty.

That's where we all come in, as usual - making sure our elected officials stick to the will of US, the people. And as usual, we've made it really easy. Just click here to add your name to the petition put together by our friends at Global Zero and join the list of Americans who want to dismantle thousands of nuclear weapons by approving this treaty.

http://www.truemajority.org/nuclearnightmare/FA

More than 30,000 TrueMajority members have already signed on, and Global Zero will be delivering the names to world leaders next week, so make sure yours is one of them.

There will be a lot more to do before we achieve our goal of total nuclear disarmament. But this is real, and important. Making changes like this is why we started TrueMajority - so sign your name, pass the message on to your friends and seize the moment.
