Choice

Logo

Dear Friend,

A funny thing is happening across Illinois.

A candidate for Governor is talking about a complicated and – let's face it – not particularly exciting issue.  A candidate is demonstrating that he has a plan, and the calm, quiet competence to put it into place and get our state back on track. A candidate is treating people like adults.

And guess what? It's working.

Dan Hynes began his campaign by introducing his comprehensive plan to get the state's finances back on track.  He discussed targeted spending cuts.  He discussed the modernization of our tax code.  And he talked about his plan to make our income tax structure more fair and progressive, sparing 97 percent of Illinois families a tax increase.

And now he is taking his plan on the road, presenting his ideas to people in communities across Illinois.  Last week Dan was in Arlington Heights to present his plan.  Yesterday, he met with the Journal-Register editorial board in Springfield.  In fact, there's a good chance he'll be visiting your community between now and Election Day, complete with his PowerPoint presentation.  And as more and more people hear about his plan, they realize they have a choice, and they like what they hear.

We see it everyday.  Support around the state for Dan's plan and his candidacy is growing.  But if we are going to continue to build on the early progress Dan has made, then we'll need your help.

Please contribute $150, $100, $50, $25 or whatever you can give so we can continue to spread our message of reform and make our tax structure more fair and progressive.

We're not the only ones that have noticed what's happening around the state. Take this newscast:

It may be common sense, but it's undeniably true: when people hear about Dan's plan versus what Pat Quinn has proposed, they choose the path of fairness, progress and respecting the middle class. They choose Dan Hynes' comprehensive plan.

And it's not just people on the street.  Our campaign picked up key labor support this week when three unions: the Bricklayers, the Cement Masons, and the Insulators endorsed Dan on Monday. This comes on the heels of major endorsements from the Carpenters and Laborers unions, and tells a simple truth: those whose livelihoods depend most on getting the economy back on track and putting people back to work are lining up behind Dan.

Join these hard working men and women across the state by supporting Dan with a contribution $150, $100, $50, or $25 or whatever you can afford so we can continue to help Dan fight for working families of Illinois.

This campaign is picking up momentum.  We have a real plan, and we have the best candidate to go to work on the issues that are most important.  We are offering voters a real choice, and they are choosing real leadership.

Thank you for all you do.

Very truly yours,

Michael Rendina
Campaign Manager
Dan Hynes for Governor

P.S. We have great momentum taking us into the fall, but it takes supporters like you to make sure voters learn about Dan's steady leadership and plan to get Illinois back on track. Please consider volunteering and making a contribution of $150, $100, $50, or $25 at our Web site.

Priorities

Logo

Dear Friends,

When I announced my campaign two weeks ago, there was no pageantry.  There were no balloons and bunting, no adoring family by my side.  Instead, I took the opportunity to talk about the fiscal crisis we are facing in Illinois, and to lay out my comprehensive plan to fix it. Under my plan, we can restore a balanced budget by 2012 while holding the line on income taxes for 97 percent of Illinois families.

I have posted my budget plan for tax fairness on my website for all to read.  Download it here to share with your friends and family.

Last March, Governor Quinn introduced his budget, relying on an income tax hike of 50 percent for all Illinois families.  He also talked about the crisis we're facing, and said immediate action was required.  After failing to win support for his budget this year, Governor Quinn recently announced he wants to wait until after the February primary to enact his 50 percent tax increase.  It's understandable that he doesn't want to face voters with a renewed emphasis on his plan to raise taxes across the board, but it's not responsible, and it's not right.

I began my campaign by introducing a comprehensive budget plan because I believe this crisis shouldn't wait, and that things are getting worse.

This was never more clear than in Tuesday's paper.  The Chicago Tribune told the story of an 86-year old woman who received a collection letter for the first time in her life from her physical therapist. The woman had suffered a stroke in December, and while the bulk of her expenses were picked up promptly by Medicare, her secondary coverage is provided by the state.  Because of our budget fiasco, state payments to health care providers are backlogged by more than six months, and over $1,400 of her medical expenses are yet to be paid.

Imagine spending your entire life – 86 years – paying your bills on time, honoring your commitments.  And then only when you are most vulnerable, most worried about your health, the collection notices start coming for bills you didn't even realize you owed.  Put simply, the state of Illinois has not been honoring its commitments.  It has not kept the faith.

This story especially struck me because just the day before, I sent to Governor Quinn a batch of state contracts totaling over $51 million for artistic and professional services that I think should be scrutinized before payments are made.  These contracts ensure that ad agencies and consultants get paid, but do nothing to cover the health care providers who care for our most vulnerable citizens and are owed in excess of $350 million.  Only Governor Quinn can say whether we should or should not pay these contracts, and on what schedule.  If he says so, if he says these contracts are his priority, then they will be paid promptly.  It's his choice.

My priorities are clear.  I want a tax structure that is fair and progressive, and that spares the middle class a 50 percent tax increase.  I want to eliminate our backlog of bills to health care providers.  I want to make sure we keep faith with the people to whom we have made commitments.  I want to move Illinois forward.

Thank you for all you do.

Very truly yours,

Dan

Another Great Day for Governor Quinn!

Schakowsky, Fellow Progressive Dems Endorse Governor Pat Quinn

Citing Governor Pat Quinn's decades of unswerving support for progressive causes in Illinois, U.S. Rep Jan Schakowsky today led a group of highly regarded Democratic elected officials and community leaders in endorsing Governor Quinn's campaign.

"I am honored by the support of Congresswoman Schakowsky and so many other well-respected Illinois leaders," Quinn said at a news conference in Chicago's Hotel Allegro. "I am very proud that these thoughtful, hard-working men and women share and support my commitment to setting our state government on a sound ethical and fiscal footing."

"Governor Quinn has demonstrated through a lifetime of public service his commitment to progressive values and the people of our state," Schakowsky said. "He took up the mantle of leadership during a trying time for Illinois, and has worked under difficult circumstances to change the political culture in Springfield. I'm proud to endorse Pat Quinn, and I will work to make sure he gets elected to four more years as Governor."

SEIU Endorses Governor Pat Quinn, Joins Forces with Teamsters

Further expanding Governor Pat Quinn's broad, diverse base of support, SEIU Illinois Council today announced its endorsement of Governor Quinn's campaign, recognizing his decades-long record of standing up for working families in Illinois.

At a news conference Monday morning in SEIU's Chicago offices, SEIU Illinois Council and Teamsters Joint Council 25-the state's two largest unions-announced they will join forces to campaign for Governor Quinn in the months leading up to the primary on Feb. 2, 2010.

"We are all in this together" -- President Obama

Let's take the momentum back!

President Obama reminded us last night that the character of our country is at stake in the health care debate.

We are all in this together and we all have work to do.

Email your representatives today.

Supporter,

Last night, President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress and closed with a moral case for health care reform, using the words of Sen. Kennedy to remind Americans that, "at stake are not just the details of policy but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country."

It's Congress' third day back on the job after August recess, and as the President reminded us, we are all in this together and we all have work to do.

Every day in our congregations and communities, people of faith see the effects of our broken health insurance system. With Congress back in session, we have a new opportunity to get reform back on track.

Write your representatives today: let them know that as a person of faith, you support action on health reform NOW.

This summer, we saw what happens to our public debates when demagogues exploit fear. This fall, let's make sure our leaders focus on the facts:

  • Health care reform will end discrimination from health insurance companies.
  • Reform will provide stability and security for those with health insurance.
  • Reform will make quality health care affordable for Americans who currently lack coverage.

This is a critical time in the health care debate. Even though the town hall disruptions are coming to an end, special interests promoting the health insurance status quo have not given up their campaign to kill reform. President Obama's speech on its own won't be enough to beat the special interests. We need to do our part, and we can take back the floor in this debate by flooding our representatives' inboxes with our positive, respectful, values-based message as they return to work.

Write your representatives: let them know you're still paying attention to the health care debate… and their vote.

The disruptive town halls were not the only story of this summer.  People of faith from across the country came together with unprecedented coordination and activity to deliver a moral message on health care reform -- and now even the President of the United States has joined us.

Let your representatives know, summer might be over but our actions aren't.

Thank you for all you do,

Beth, Katie, Dan, Kristin and Jennifer
